Geocaching in Kosciusko County is a fun way to get outside. There are over 70 geocaches in Kosciusko County. Geocaching is an activity that can take you to places in your community you’ve never been before. Geocaches are different sizes, shapes, and difficulties.

How to Geocache

Download the geocaching app and make a free account. After that, find a geocache near you and select it. The app tells you where the geocache is but you get to decide how to get there. The difficulty level tells you how hard it is to find and the terrain level tells how hard it is to get to the geocache.

Once you are within 20-30 feet of the geocache, put away your phone and start looking around. Geocaches can be boxes or items. They are never buried but they don’t have to be on the ground. They could be in a tree or hidden. They each have a name and a description.

Make sure you always bring a pen when you geocache. Some geocaches have a logbook in it to sign. When you find the geocache, if it has a logbook, sign it. Then log your find on the app. Once you sign the logbook and log your find on the app, move on to the next geocache.

Geocaching Etiquette

Some geocaches are boxes or bags and they have small seemingly random items in them. You can trade these items by replacing it with something else then moving one item to another geocache. Some items are labeled “Trackable at Geocaching.com” and they have a unique code. You can enter this code on the website and see where the item has been. All items should be legal and safe. Don’t leave any smelly items or food in the geocache since they can go bad or attract animals.

When you’re geocaching, respect the environment by not trampling plants or animals and respecting natural areas. Something you can do to help the environment is to pick up any trash you find. Be safe when you’re geocaching and follow local laws and signage. It’s always good to be prepared when going geocaching. Bring a flashlight if you need it and keep your cell phone on if you need to contact someone.
